However, what many people don’t realize is that although it’s naturally strong, the pH of your saliva can affect your enamel’s durability. Here’s a closer look at how, and what you can do to keep your mouth as close to basic as possible.

What is the Ideal pH for Saliva?

The term pH is short for “potential of hydrogen,” meaning the values of the concentration of hydrogen ions in the specific substance. In the case of saliva, a healthy range should be between 6.7 and 7.4; however, it can often be much lower due to diet, medication, age, and bacteria levels. In fact, according to Healthline, anything below 5.5 can cause what is known as enamel demineralization, which can leave your teeth vulnerable to sensitivity, cavities, and decay.

How Can I Change the pH of My Saliva?

There are several ways you can increase the pH of your saliva. First, start with your diet. Be sure to avoid foods that are very acidic or contain lots of sugar and carbohydrates. Another way you can improve the base is with your toothpaste.

Most toothpaste ranges in pH from seven to 10 pH values. The higher the pH, the more “base” it is considered. Toothpastes that register highest on this scale are typically those that contain baking soda. Lower pH toothpaste are usually designed for whitening or preventing decay. It is important to note that any of these products can make a big impact maintaining balance in your smile; however, if you are specifically trying to neutralize acidity, the higher the base number, the better!

How Does Acid Hurt Your Teeth?

As alluded to above, acid can be dangerous to your tooth enamel. That’s because it causes what is known as demineralization, a condition which strips beneficial calcium, magnesium, carbonite, fluoride, and more from your teeth. Unfortunately, once lost, enamel doesn’t regrow. It can be strengthened by using fluoridated toothpaste, drinking treated water, and receiving fluoride treatment from your dentist; however, if left depleted, can make your teeth brittle and more prone to breakage, and even increase your risk of cavities, sensitivity, and decay.

To prevent permanent damage to your teeth, it is best to maintain a healthy oral pH. If your current toothpaste isn’t doing enough, speak to your dentist about which product she or he recommends for your individual smile. Often, switching to a baking soda toothpaste can make an amazing impact on improving your oral health.

Remember, the pH of your saliva can affect more than just the way your food tastes. It can also leave your enamel vulnerable to acid and demineralization, increasing your risk of cavities and decay. To take control of your teeth and protect against damage, look for a toothpaste with a high base, or talk to your dentist about which products are right for you!

About Our Practice

At Dental Group West, our trio of caring and skilled dentists wants to equip you with the best tools possible for a healthy smile!
