While your baby sits comfortably in your lap, we’ll quickly do an exam and go over how you should properly care for your child’s teeth at home. Here are a few tips to make taking care of your children’s smile pleasant and beneficial:
- Before that first pearly white tooth appears, wipe your baby’s gums with a dampened cloth after feeding. This removes harmful bacteria.
- Once that first tooth does appear, you can begin brushing. Use a soft infant toothbrush and a small dab of fluoride toothpaste. As more teeth break through the gums, you can begin flossing, too.
- Wait until your child is about two years old before you teach them to spit after brushing. And to minimize the risk of swallowing toothpaste, give them only a small amount of water to rinse.
Drs. Thomas, Weisenburger and Poole suggest that you begin scheduling regular biannual checkups for your children sometime between the ages of two and three. Beginning at this young age allows your children to develop a comfortable familiarity with the dentist’s office and establish a lifetime of good oral health care habits. At these appointments, we’ll clean your children’s teeth, examine their gum tissue for any signs of periodontal disease. We’ll also conduct a thorough head and neck exam including an oral cancer screen, checks for developmental disorders, malocclusions (bite problems), and evidence of dietary problems.

Topical fluoride applied in our office hardens tooth enamel, the outer layer that first comes under attack by the bacteria that causes decay. Dental sealants start out as liquid plastic that is “painted” on to the biting surfaces of your children’s molars. After being hardened with a curing light, sealants become a barrier between bacteria and enamel.
